CRISIS HOUSE HISTORY

"Giving a hand up is better than a hand out"

When the founders of what is now Crisis House first opened their doors for business in the East County Region more than thirty-five (35) years ago, their philosophy was based upon the premise "that the community should have access to low cost, confidential social/human care services". With this philosophy in mind Crisis House became a reality.

Much has been accomplished since our humble beginnings in a two-bedroom house in Lakeside in 1970 to our current location at 1034 North Magnolia in El Cajon, CA. A strong sense of community support with dedicated staff, committed volunteers, coupled with guidance over the years from our Board of Directors, has lead Crisis House through thirty-five years of human care services aimed at helping the less fortunate to help themselves.

The 70's and early 80's were years of growth and program development for Crisis House while we adapted to an ever changing social environment. Crisis House programs included clinical services, social services, community training, and rehabilitation services all forming a contimum of care tailored to meet the needs of people living and working in the region.

It was also a time of important change. In 1980, Crisis House, as we know it today, separated from its parent organization (renamed Professional Community Services) and became an independent social services agency with a focus on community social service programs, i.e. case management, emergency services, transportation, temporary shelter and regional coordination of USDA Commodities and a particular program emphasis on child abuse prevention and intervention programs.

The 90's marked the beginnings of a new era for Crisis House. Through the acquisition of a variety of funding sources we entered into homeless support services by providing for people living on the streets and an emerging socio-economically disadvantaged population (those living on the fringe), by offering a myriad of social services necessary to assist in their stabilization and recovery.

Today, Crisis House offers an integrated system of basic human care services to assist people in need...individuals who struggle daily to overcome difficult circumstances that significantly interfere with their ability to carry out such primary aspects of daily life as self care, household management, interpersonal relationships, and obtaining employment. Each day the number of families and single individuals who seek help seems to increase! Their needs are diverse in nature but often reflect the malasie of today's society. The common goal held for every client entering Crisis House is one of self-sufficiency. Each individual is viewed as having the core responsibility for his or her own life to achieve a sense of self-reliance in solving individual problems and improving their quality of life.

We at Crisis House are proud of our results and accomlishments over the past thirty-five (35) years. As for the future, we are dedicated and commited to the social changes and challenges that lie ahead and we welcome change as a pathway for the future.
